As we get into the dog days of summer, it’s important that we protect our pups from unsafe heat conditions. Here are some fun tips to keep your dog feeling comfortable this summer.
1. LET THEM SWIM!
Take them to the local watering hole or set up a kiddie pool in your backyard.
2. WALK YOUR DOG EARLY MORNING OR AFTER SUNSET
Midday tends to be the hottest time of day so avoid the heat by hiding from the sun.
3. PROTECT THEIR PAWS
Cement and asphalt temperatures can get hot enough to damage paw pads. If you touch the floor with your hand and if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog! Booties and special balms can protect their feet and can be found in most pet stores.
4. GIVE THEM COLD TREATS
Some dogs are simple and absolutely love chomping on crunchy ice cubes. There are also tons of great frozen treat recipes you can look up. Make pupsicles with tasty broth or freeze a Kong with peanut butter.
5. BRING THEM TO A COOL ROOM
It’s hard to get the exercise your dog needs when it’s blisteringly hot out. Thankfully we have dog safe cooling fans. An cool indoor play room allows your pup to have fun, comfortable play.
6. KEEP THEM HYDRATED
Make sure to bring cold water with you on walks. Wet your dog’s paws occasionally or spritz them with a spray bottle to help them cool off as well.
